It was an amazing experience at the Marina on the night of -January 22nd. The protest was entirely peaceful and people from all walks of life were present. Volunteers ensured that traffic moved, albeit slowly. The police were there as a token presence, but had nothing much to do. Needless to say there were plenty of women and children and, unlike other cities, they were absolutely safe. Whether you support Jallikattu or not, we all have to be proud of the manner in which the youth went about this protest. Hopefully this will herald a new beginning for our State, writes Vijay Sriram who took these pictures. Editor’s Note: Then, WHY did a Gandhian type of protest turned violent on the 23rd? But that used to happen in those days in the 1940s, too, didn’t they?
