A house that should be saved

Page 3_1

I have been doing my walking and work-outs at the YMCA Nandanam every day for the past 15 years. And there, a bit of Indian sports history is being totally neglected.

My picture is of a derelict house, the one in which Harry Crowe Buck lived in. Buck was the ‘Father of the Indian Olympic Movement’ and gave life to sports like Athletics, Basketball, Volleyball and Boxing.

Some years ago, there used to be a Lecturer living there. Now, the management is rapidly commercialising the entire area. It has cut age-old trees, demolishing and constructing buildings as it wishes.

I fear that this house with a history, facing the Adyar River, may one day crumble and that will be the excuse to demolish it. INTACH or anyone else must save this lovely house, with a pond in front of it, remnants of it still visible.
