Natyarangam

The article on Natyarangam by Sujatha Vijayaraghavan was really fascinating. (December 1st edition). The Natyrangam was started, as highlighted by the author, to put a stop to the practice of individual performers paying a fee to the Sabhas and soon it’s objects got enlarged to provide a platform to talented young dancers and to create awareness in the audience about various aspects of dance appreciation

It has brought out a thematic change in Bharatha Natyam. More significantly it exposed the cause of puthu kavithai in Bharatha Natyam. But here something is found lacking – a true and greater vision for Bharatha Natyam. As the name itself suggests, it’s influence and spread are not limited to Tamil areas but beyond. The songs were more of Carnatic origin and dancers or performers also from different regions though those regions also have their own brands of dances. The Natyarangam may have to consider Bharatha Natyam as such and should try to extend the experimental approach for bringing in Puthu Kavithai of other regions’ languages like Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam etc also within its ambit.
