Heritage Watch: From Exchange to Mess to Museum

The Fort Museum is a structure of extraordinary resilience. Prior to the 1790s it was a private residence and then became the commodities exchange of the Fort. From the 19th century, with commerce moving out it became the regimental mess and then, post-Independence, the museum.

NEW

Our OLD, which is a rarely seen photograph, with the building captured from an unusual angle, is courtesy Philip Thornton, who as per his Facebook profile is a Video Games Designer and Digital Artist and who in recent times has been putting up lovingly restored old digital prints of the British Empire. He dates this image to the 1880s. We thank him for graciously giving us permission to print this picture.

The NEW is a recent and more conventional view of the Fort Museum.
